What Does an SDR Do? Exploring Sales Development Roles

By Taha Bin Ishfaq  |  August 19, 2026  |  7 min read

If you're building a B2B sales team, you've likely come across the term SDR (Sales Development Representative). But what exactly does an SDR do, and why do you need one?

In modern B2B sales, the sales process is split into two distinct parts: finding the leads, and closing the deals. SDRs handle the first part. By dedicating a role entirely to prospecting and qualification, companies ensure their closers (Account Executives) aren't wasting time searching for phone numbers or pitching to unqualified prospects. As an experienced freelance SDR, here is a breakdown of what the role actually entails.

SDR vs. BDR vs. Account Executive

First, let's clear up the acronyms:

  • SDR (Sales Development Representative): Primarily focuses on inbound leads — qualifying prospects who have downloaded a whitepaper, requested a demo, or attended a webinar. However, in many companies (especially startups), SDRs handle outbound prospecting as well.
  • BDR (Business Development Representative): Usually focuses strictly on outbound sales — cold calling, cold emailing, and social selling to generate net-new leads.
  • AE (Account Executive): The closer. AEs take the qualified meetings generated by SDRs/BDRs, conduct discovery calls, present demos, negotiate, and close the deal.

Typical Daily Tasks of an SDR

So, what does an SDR actually do all day? The core responsibility is moving a prospect from "never heard of us" to "ready for a meeting." This involves:

1. Prospecting and Lead Generation

SDRs spend a large portion of their day researching target accounts. They use tools like Apollo, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, and ZoomInfo to find companies that match their Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), and then identify the specific decision-makers within those companies. They build targeted, verified lead lists to fuel their outreach.

2. Cold Outreach (Email, Phone, LinkedIn)

SDRs execute multi-channel outreach sequences. They write personalized cold emails, send LinkedIn connection requests and messages, and pick up the phone to make cold calls. The goal isn't to sell the product, but to sell the meeting.

3. Lead Qualification

Not every interested prospect is a good fit. SDRs use frameworks like BANT (Budget, Authority, Need, Timeline) to quickly qualify prospects during initial conversations. If a prospect isn't ready or doesn't have the budget, the SDR disqualifies them so the AE doesn't waste time on a doomed deal.

4. CRM Management

A good SDR is a CRM master. They log every call, email, and LinkedIn message in Salesforce or HubSpot, update pipeline stages, schedule follow-up tasks, and ensure data remains clean and organized.

5. Appointment Setting

The ultimate goal of the SDR is to book a meeting (or "Demo") for the Account Executive. Once a prospect is qualified and interested, the SDR handles the scheduling and passes the baton.

Qualities of a Successful SDR

It's a tough role. The best SDRs share a few common traits:

  • Resilience: You face constant rejection. Successful SDRs brush off the "no's" and move on to the next prospect.
  • Curiosity: Good SDRs ask great questions. They genuinely want to understand the prospect's business problems.
  • Organization: Managing hundreds of leads, sequences, and follow-ups requires extreme attention to detail and impeccable CRM hygiene.
