High email bounce rates are one of the fastest ways to destroy a cold outreach campaign — and your domain reputation. The good news: most bounces are preventable with proper list verification before you send.
For cold email campaigns, keep your hard bounce rate below 3%. Most ESPs and cold email tools will pause or suspend your account if you exceed 5–8%. Google and Microsoft begin filtering your messages to spam before then.
Bounce rates begin at the sourcing stage. Emails from professional databases like Apollo and ZoomInfo (filtered to high-confidence) have naturally lower bounce rates than scraped or purchased lists. Only use contacts from reputable, frequently-updated sources.
Before any campaign send, export your list and run it through NeverBounce or ZeroBounce. Remove:
B2B email data decays at 25–30% per year. A list you built 6 months ago could have a significantly higher bounce rate today. Always re-verify any list that's older than 60–90 days before reusing it.
If you're starting fresh with a new sending domain, don't send to your full list immediately. Warm up by sending 20–30 emails per day for the first 2–3 weeks, gradually increasing volume. This builds your sender reputation before sending at scale.
Review bounce reports after every send. If a particular data source or list segment has higher bounce rates, investigate before using it again. Consistent monitoring catches problems before they escalate to blacklisting.
