You can find B2B lead lists for $5–$20 per thousand contacts on freelancing platforms and lead broker sites. It sounds like a deal. In practice, it usually isn't — and here's why the cost ends up being much higher than the price tag.
B2B contact data decays at a rate of roughly 25–30% per year. People change jobs, companies close, domains expire. A list that was accurate 12 months ago is now 25% wrong. Cheap lists are often compiled once and resold repeatedly for years — meaning you could be buying data that's 2–3 years old.
The result: high bounce rates, wrong people, wasted effort.
Generic lead lists are compiled by scraping the web indiscriminately. They contain everyone who works at a company — assistants, interns, people in unrelated departments — rather than the decision makers who can actually buy from you. You end up spending sales time on contacts who have no authority or interest.
When you send to invalid emails (from a stale list), you get hard bounces. When you send to spam traps embedded in cheap lists, you get flagged immediately. Both outcomes damage your domain's sender score — making it progressively harder for your legitimate emails to reach anyone's inbox.
Recovering a blacklisted domain takes weeks or months and may require getting a new sending domain entirely.
The same cheap list sold to you has been sold to dozens or hundreds of other buyers. The contacts on it have been cold emailed relentlessly. Response rates are near zero because they're exhausted by outreach — and they've seen the same approach too many times.
