An Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) is the single most important document in any B2B sales operation. Without one, your lead generation is guesswork. With a well-defined ICP, every lead list you build becomes dramatically more targeted — and your outreach converts at a much higher rate.
An ICP is a detailed description of the type of company (and the type of buyer within that company) that is most likely to get value from your product or service and, as a result, convert into a long-term customer. It's not a persona — it's a company-level profile.
Start with data, not assumptions. Look at your existing customers — especially the ones who converted fastest, churned least, and spent the most. What do they have in common?
Firmographics are the demographic equivalent for companies. For your ICP, specify:
Your ICP should also specify who within the target company you're selling to:
Put your ICP in a document and share it with everyone involved in lead generation, SDR outreach, and marketing. An ICP only works when everyone uses the same definition of who you're targeting.
Your ICP is a living document. After every batch of outreach, review which companies responded and converted — and update your profile accordingly. The best ICPs get more specific over time, not broader.
